Briefwechsel von Leonhard Euler mit Christian Goldbach

Briefwechsel von Leonhard Euler mit Christian Goldbach research project hero image

Digital edition of nearly 200 letters between Leonhard Euler and Christian Goldbach (1729-1764), a key source for 18th-century number theory.

Full Project Description

The Euler-Goldbach correspondence comprises nearly 200 letters exchanged between Leonhard Euler and the Prussian mathematician Christian Goldbach from 1729 to 1764. As Euler's most substantial long-term correspondence, these letters provide a comprehensive overview of 18th-century number theory - including the famous Goldbach conjecture - and offer insights into academic life in St. Petersburg and Berlin. The digital edition on the BEOL platform is based on the critical edition published in 2015 as part of the Leonhardi Euleri Opera Omnia, edited by Martin Mattmüller and Franz Lemmermeyer.
