Short Description

The Digital LIMC is a digital platform for classical mythology. It contains what we know about the iconography of Greek, Etruscan and Roman mythology in both ancient Greek, Etruscan and Roman art, as well as neighboring Mediterranean cultures. This wealth of myths and legends that we have inherited from antiquity constitutes an essential element of our cultural heritage. The Digital LIMC makes all the data assembled in the course of preparing the 10 double volumes of the Lexicon Iconographicum Mythologiae Classicae (LIMC) accessible, as well as the 10 volumes of the Thesaurus Cultus et Rituum Antiquorum (ThesCRA), which are currently stored in the basement of a building at the University of Basel.

The purpose of the Digital LIMC is to maintain the image and data collections generated by the LIMC and ThesCRA publications and digitally process them for teaching and research. The database allows the online consultation and retrieval of approximately 50,000 monuments featuring ancient iconography. Please be aware that the copyright of the images in the database belongs to the respective owner of the objects – museums, collections – rather than the University of Basel.

We are working on making the data available on our user friendly DSP-APP. Thank you for your patience.
