Alice in DaSCHland: Navigating the Maze of Data Ownership

Writer's picture: Daniela SuboticDaniela Subotic

The theme of International Love Data Week 2025, “Whose Data Is It, Anyway?”, asks us to think about the ownership and use of data. Data is often collected by different groups - researchers, governments, companies and organizations - who may own, share, publish or combine it with other datasets. This theme reminds us to consider where data comes from before using it.

Discover how we tackled the challenges of collecting and organizing diverse data related to the beloved story Alice in Wonderland for our example project. Along the way, we faced complex questions:

  • Is this data free of rights?

  • Who are the rightful authors or owners?

  • How do we take care of the data responsibly?

Through this project, we’ll explore real-world issues of data ownership, copyright, and ethical usage, offering insights into the intricacies of working with cultural and creative data.

Follow us down the rabbit hole!
